Ensign John Hambright was born 1749 in Lancaster, PA. He was the son of John Hambright who served on the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. The younger John began as a Sergeant Major in the Lancaster County Militia.
He joined the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment which spent the brutal winter of 1777 with George Washington at Valley Forge. John served at Valley Forge as Quartermaster Sergeant for the Regiment. In 1778 General Washington resolved to go on the offensive. John was then promoted to Ensign. The 10th Regiment was assigned to General George Washington's main army and it fought the British in several key battles in the North, including Monmouth, Springfield and Bulls Ferry. On April 12, 1779 John was appointed a Lieutenant over the Marines on board the ship USS General Greene.
John and his wife, Susannah Grosch, had six children named John, George, Elizabeth, Frederick, William and Sarah. John died July 31, 1806.
